Wind Powered Turbines - Real Life Test Facility
The site is a wind generation plant located in a region notorious for winter storms with a Keraunic level of between 30 and 50. The site was constructed with no consideration for lightning protection. The site can experience up to 8 to 10 strikes in less that 3 hours.
In January 1997 one of the turbines suffered substantial damage from a series of violent thunderstorms.
The damage consisted of broken blades and irreparable damage to electrical, phone and computer systems.
Indelec was called in to supply lightning protection solution to the site and due to the high level of lightning activity, decided to keep monitoring the performance of the system installed.
The attached brochure gives a very concise report of the site issues and the very successful solution to the problem.
This also has allowed us to identify a true solution to the problems of lightning protection for wind generation plants all over the region.
