Water cooler bottles are large and relatively unstable when empty. Inspecting these containers for foreign matter or damage is an expensive endeavour.
Industrial Photonics has developed the RotoPhoto system which overcomes these issues by using machine vision technology coupled with state of the art inspection software and algorithms.
The RotoPhoto system utilizes a pair of servo driven belts to rotate each bottle in a controlled manner as it passes the camera array. In this way, images can be collected which will provide adequate information to determine product acceptability.
The RotoPhoto system utilizes four PPT Vision smart cameras which collect images from four different perspectives. The first camera looks vertically down through the neck and detects foreign matter in the base of each bottle. A second top camera inspects the shoulder area for algal stain which can occur during long term storage at customer promises. Both of these cameras depend on high intensity LED backlighting to achieve the desired result.
Two side cameras are triggered at appropriate times to capture images of the handle and label areas respectively. These cameras are programmed to inspect for foreign objects in the handle area as well as physical damage including excessive scuff marks. The second side camera checks the label to ensure that the bottle is from the correct company and that label is legible.
The result is a very robust and reliable inspection system that can provide beverage manufacturers with assurance that product quality is always at an optimal level.
