A privately-owned Australian company, Alloys have been operating in Melbourne since 1982. In the early 2000s Alloys acquired the large-scale workshop, Avweld, to enable us to do our own mechanical repairs. Alloys & Avweld’s goals are achieved through the implementation of the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Standard.
Both businesses focus on extending the life of critical equipment. Alloys do this by the provision of expert advice, maintenance welding consumables and AbrasaPlate® wear plate. At Avweld we provide full scale mechanical repairs, on crushers, pumps, shafts, amongst many other things. We are also certified Loctite Composite applicators, providing products for rubber and steel repair.
“We like to keep at the forefront of advances in welding and thermal spray technology, and as such have the widest range of hardfacing alloys available for excellent abrasion and impact resistance. Innovative products like the AbrasaPlate® -X cross hatch wear plate have enabled us to keep ahead of the competition for over 30 years.” – Jason Bond, Business Development Manager.
Alloys and Avweld have offices around the country, with manufacturing and repairs taking place at the head office in Melbourne. We are currently experiencing strong growth and look forward to supporting the infrastructure boom taking place currently in Victoria.
Customer Testimonial
Name: Don Rigby
Company: Conundrum Quarry Stawell
Product: Aggregate – Hornfels 135mm minus
Application: Chute with 1m discharge directly on plate
David Camilleri from Alloys International was keen for us to trial one of their wear plates. We were initially reluctant to do so as we were very busy and satisfied with the plates in service to date. David was confident and offered a section of plate to be trialled with pay on performance terms. With that, we agreed and gave David the challenge of tackling the highest wearing plate in our quarry being the recirculating discharge impact plate. The 1m discharge combined with 135mm minus Hornfels rock has been a challenge for all plates trialled in the past.
We felt 6-7 months would allow adequate time to evaluate the plate. The Cross Hatch AbrasaPlate® with dimensions 570mm x 750mm was fitted on the 5th May245,000 ton of rocks later (approx. 7 months), upon inspection we found little visible wear and no impact defects. We were so impressed we purchased a couple of sheets in the thinner cross hatch wear plate version (6/8) to reduce weight throughout the plant. We also had David
line a bucket with 10mm rolled Hardox and inner/outer walls with cross hatch 4/6.
This same trial plate was again inspected on the 23rd June 2017. 445,000 had now passed over this plate at a rate of 400 – 600 tons/hour. Signs of wear was evident, but we found the plate was still in great condition.
On the 19th December 2017, we again inspected this plate. After 966,309 ton of rock, the plate was still, amazingly, suitable to continue. As of November 2018, we are now on the forth rotation and will exceed 1 million ton of rock per rotation.
The AbrasaPlate® Cross Hatch has far exceeded expectation and has been the best plate we’ve come across since established in 1988. We at Conundrum would certainly recommend this plate. To summarise, the key benefits for us have been as follows:
• Thinner plate introduced due to the improved wear rate from cross hatch pattern, reducing weight
• Cost benefit in less frequent change over
• Similar cost in purchase price
• Great service & advice from David Camilleri
• Able to supply plates cut to shape/size
• No failure of hardened surface e.g. cracking or break out
• Variety of applications, i.e. applied to chutes and buckets
(lip, side walls and rear)
