Buying a forklift is a lot more complicated than most people realise and without learning about your options, you're bound to end up with the wrong equipment for your particular application. In order to select the correct equipment for your work environment, it is important to do your homework.

This can be a time consuming process and it is often hard to know where exactly to start. For part 1 of our Forklift Buyers Guide, we’ve selected the most fundamental decision making aspects of buying a forklift that we are calling the "3 Golden Rules". We consider these initial steps crucial in your purchase process, putting you on the right track in order to select the perfect forklift for your business.

3 Golden Rules

1. The application is key

Getting the right equipment for the right application is extremely important. There are a variety of manufacturers and thousands of different models of forklifts to choose from in today’s market which at first can seem very daunting. However, by assessing your application needs you will be able to narrow down the choices and ultimately select the most beneficial forklift for the job.

2. Choose the right after sales support

It doesn’t matter how good the equipment is, without quality 'after sales support' you will find yourself in trouble. Machines do break down, whether it's a hand pallet jack or a 52 tonne reach stacker, they are all prone to mechanical failure. Therefore, it is important to consider a company that can provide local support to ensure a prompt response should any problems arise. Choose a supplier that is locally owned and operated. Locally owned dealers have a stronger invested interest in looking after you.

3. Never base your choice solely on upfront price

It is important to always consider the ongoing cost of the machinery over its lifetime. In doing this, try to look at 5 key areas: fuel costs, tyre costs, operator costs, servicing costs and resale value. Keeping these key areas in mind throughout the purchasing process will save you both time and money in the long term.
